In 2004 the South African Presidency Handed over the presidential Sport awards to Ministry of Sport and recreation, and thus the SA sport awards were realised   The Mpumalanga Sports awards aims to recognise and honour individuals and teams that have excelled both on and off the field within particular period.

SuperSports is the broadcasting partners of the program. Nedbank is the generous funding sponsor of the Sports Awards. Women continue to be marginalised and are faced with gender discrimination in sport. These discrimination patterns are deep entrenched in some of the deep rural areas of the province.

The Mpumalanga sports awards therefore provides a platform to recognise women who against all odds partake in developing and nurturing of women sports in the province on an annual basis. The MEC for culture, Sport and recreation in the province is allowed an opportunity to confer a special recognition on the athlete who has shown immense contribution towards sport development for the particular year.

In Sports clubs all across the country there are thousands of people who are taking part in a sport they love. They might be at the beginning of their journey or at the pinnacle of their sporting dream, or just using sport to make positive changes to their lives.

A Provincial Sports awards in partnership with the Mpumalanga provincial government in order to recognize and reward sports excellence across all groups in the province.
